I, David Helms, and my son Chandler drove to Charles Town, WV in may 2005. We went to see the last survivor living in the USA from WWI, Frank Woodruff Buckles, age 105. He served on the medic squad in France at the age of 16.5. Frank Buckles served under general “Blackjack” Pershing. Frank Buckles was working as a civilian in the 1940’s over in the Philippines. As you can imagine, he and other American civilians were captured by the Japanese and held prisoner. Frank was first sent to Santo Tomas Interment Camp and later to Los Banos. All total, his imprisonment time was approximately 3 years, 1942-1945. Needless to say , it was an honor and privilege to visit Mr. Buckles on his beautiful farm, Gap View, all 330 acres. He lived to be 110 and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery, So is his commander, General “Blackjack” Pershing.
David, thank you for your remarks regarding Frank Buckles. He certainly lived a long, and extraordinary, life. There is a short biography of Frank Buckles at Wikipedia.org with some nice photos. Thanks again and regards, Cliff Mills.
