While researching the background of Santo Tomas internee Blakey Borthwick Laycock, who was executed by the Japanese in 1942, I came across a 2013 article titled War camp mass has Aussie premiere<\/a><\/em> about a song for the internees written by entertainer Dave Harvey and composer Mario Bakerini-Booth.<\/p>\n

According to the article, “It was absolutely predictable that Harvey and Mario Bakerini-Booth became great friends. Not long after the Easter mass was performed, Mario wrote the music for Internee Song<\/em> while Harvey wrote the lyrics.<\/p>\n

It was presented at a camp concert for the first time on May 22, 1943. Later its performance was banned, though internees continued to sing the words and hum the music out of the earshot of their Japanese guards.”<\/p>\n

We live a life that\u2019s new to us
\nMost of us here were strangers
\nOur habits and customs were numerous
\nWe\u2019ve survived these communal dangers.
\nYou may be a Pole or American, English or Scotch or Dutch
\nBut whatever your nationality
\nIt doesn\u2019t matter much,

\nAnd we\u2019re all resolved to pull the load together.<\/p>\n

\nAnd we\u2019re ready to help in fair or stormy weather
\nOur troubles may be many
\nBut we\u2019re over 3,000-strong
\nDark clouds are hovering over us
\nBut they won\u2019t be there for long
\nFor there\u2019ll come a wind that will blow those clouds away
\nAnd scatter them till they\u2019re lost
\nIt\u2019s coming across the water
\nIt\u2019s blowing from every quarter
\nTo us internees of Santo Tomas.<\/p>\n

For we\u2019re internees of Santo Tomas
