Repatriation & Rescue
During the War, some internees and their families were repatriated to the United States during two official exchanges of civilians. A small number of non-internees escaped by submarines, or by other methods. After liberation, several transports were used to bring back thousands of internees to the United States and Australia. These lists are made up of two files provided the the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA): “List of American Citizens” and “List or Manifest of Alien Passengers for United States Immigrant Inspector at Port of Arrival.” Click the name of the ship to link to the passenger list (not all lists are yet available). The number in parenthesis following the ship name indicates the number of internees on that list.
